Hazy

Image
Hazy Most of the photos she took of her friends were hazy, because she always laughed while capturing them. Most of the pictures she drew were not colored, because she wanted her loved one to color them with her. Most of the nights she woke up worried, because he was working till a late hour. Most of the days she looked tired, because she was nursing her newborn twins. Most of the time she felt cold, because she was not used to the freezing cold weather of Europe. She came from a warmer place, a place she called home. She had to leave it because war tore it apart. She embarked on an uncertain fate to save her little family. She knew how to swim, which saved her, unlike her sisters. She left her homeland hoping for a better future. She heard racist slurs on her way to pick up her eldest son from school. She was denied a job because she wore a headscarf. She worked as a freelance photographer, but once she took pictures of a group friends, it reminded her of h

Why Dentists Are More Suicidal

Image
Dentistry is a great profession. It's a combination of art and science. Though being a dentist is a great thing, it has its drawbacks.  Recent Studies reported in dental literature confirm that dentists are subject to a variety of stress-related physical and emotional problems. In this post, I won't discuss that. This post is only to make my fellow dentists smile and laugh at what we all deal with. Dentists sometimes regret going to dental school. Here is why: 1- The Hate Dose You're Blessed With :  The first thing some of your patients say once they see you is : I HATE nothing in my life more than dentists. Or that female patient who goes like : You know what doctor? I'm wiling to endure the pain of labor every single day but I hate dental visits. 2- Your Tongue Tie Once You Hear The Following : Patient : Doctor haven't you killed the pulp yet? Patient : Doctor why do I have to make this x-ray? I know my teeth, my roots aren't curved! Patient : D

Inevitable Egyptian Aunties' Comments You Grow Up Hearing

Image
Being a girl anywhere in the world, is certainly not all fun. Every society has its pros and cons. But In Egypt, it has a different taste. It's both sad and funny, Confusing as heck that leaves you speechless sometimes. We have some judgmental old women that can drive you insane. The Following are some of the most hilarious comments a regular middle class Egyptian girl have to deal with every single day. 1- The Nice Girl Should Talk In A Low Voice! But auntie, this is the nature of my voice, I'm loud and I can't help it!. 2- The Cute girl should wear heels. Forget it ma'am I prefer comfy shoes! 3- You Should Not Talk Back to Men, Ladies Don't Argue We Are Nicer Than That! I can and I will. 4- Wear More Makeup / Wear Less Makeup To Attract Grooms. I need more than just a shallow man who thinks of  just the exterior, Pass! 5- Wear Tight Clothes/ Use Bleaching Creams/ Wear contact lenses/ Lose Your Eyeglasses To look More Attractive. Tant, I don

Sex Education.... Yay or Nay?!

Image
A month ago, I read an interesting article. It was about Egyptian guys sharing how they found out about sex. Some of them found their answers in a really unfavorable way. In my humble opinion, that would be less likely to happen if our families and teachers have a proper talk with teens and educate them about such sensitive issue. What I read brought me back to my teen years. My wondering about what sex is started because of a science class in middle school. The day we studied male and female reproductive systems was hilarious.... I remember I kept asking my classmates if they got anything regarding how the zygote is formed since the sperms are from the male and the ovum is from the female..... no one answered me.... except one of them pointing at the illustrations in the school book and saying this goes there.... I was like : I don't believe you. I  stood up in the middle of the class and asked our teacher Miss, the sperms are from the male....Ok.....how can they end up in

Till We Meet Again

Image
We have a proverb in Arabic that says that good times pass by so fast الأوقات الحلوة بتعدي بسرعة. This one is definitely true. No matter how long the time might seem to be sometimes, it can be so short when you want to tell someone how grateful you are to them or how much you love them, how much you are going to miss them, and how desperately you wish to see them again if not in this life, then at least in the next one. You turn away to catch your transportation home and your body is doing its best to move fast while your soul is begging it not to. Wishing that somehow the time just stops for a second, that the Earth would slow down, that the moon would take a break, that the whole universe would listen carefully cause two human beings are trying to have a proper goodbye. A parent and a child, two siblings, two friends, two neighbours or two lovers. To sum it up, time is so short for those who are in love. Poetry sums it up perfectly : كأنا خلقنا للنوى و كأنما حرام على الأيا

What Should I Say? - A Poem by Nizar Qabbani

Image
What should I say if he asked me if I hate him or love him? What should I say? I love every little thing about him and every single detail.... how can I get over it my God? What's with me starring at the mirror asking it what should I wear when I meet him? How can I run away from him? He is my destiny, how possibly can a river change it's course? I love him, and I dont even know what exactly I love about him. Even his flaws are not flaws anymore because I adore them. Love is a part of our being. If it doesn't exist on the face of the Earth, we would have invented it! What should I say if he asked me whether I hate him or love him? I don't just love him ... I love him 1000 times more! Here is the Original poem in Arabic : ماذا أقول له لو جاء يسألني.. إن كنت أكرهه أو كنت أهواه؟ رباه.. أشياؤه الصغرى تعذبني فكيف أنجو من الأشياء رباه؟ ما لي أحدق في المرآة .. أسألها بأي ثوب من الأثواب ألقاه وكيف أهرب منه؟ إنه قدري هل يملك النهر تغيي

A Man!

Image
As a child a man to me was someone caring, thoughtful & protective. To me my father & my uncles were a great example of how great men can be. Growing up, I started feeling that men's world is mysterious................. & I was dying to know more about those Aliens! :D  A man to me is someone you can trust. someone you can pour your heart & mind out for him to know you better & you find him willing to know more & he is willing to listen in order to understand .... not to judge!. A man is someone willing to know your interests & your priorities, he is eager to know you as a person he is not willing to look down on you & he doesn't think that your interests are insignificant. He takes you seriously, he cares about you & about your well being. He wants to make you happy. He is ready to give without expecting much in return. He is there for you when you need him. He is simply a human being! a good one sometimes :P you know what? and this is c

Trusting people?!!!..... It’s Still Possible

Image
You visit a place where you don't speak the language, you have no connections there, you're on your own. While you're in that situation, you choose to put your trust in people sometimes because you really trust them and other times because you have absolutely no other choice. On my second day in India I got lost ( I got lost a lot there I kind of got famous for it) Anyway I didn't have an indian number yet when that happened so I went to a small shop then I asked the owner to lend me his phone cause I was lost and needed to call my friends to help me reach home safely. He gave me the phone without any hesitation. I made a phone call and he helped explain to my friends where exactly is the shop so they asked him to allow me to stay at his shop till they pick me up. 10 minutes later, they called saying that they would not be able to come for me and asked him to write down the exact adress and make sure the tuk tuk driver knows it this time. The man seemed a bit unea

KSA...... Flashbacks

I wrote the following note two years ago : " Taking a look at the old pictures from my last visit to Makkah and Madinah in summer 2012 .............  I miss going there so much. I miss having chit chats with people that I've never met before. I miss grabbing a bite with them. I miss breaking my fasting trying different kinds of snacks from different cuisines offered by the ladies setting next to me. I remember a Moroccan lady givng me something sweet to try ...... I Loved it! I miss thefeeling of being amongst aone big family there. I miss all of those Turkish ladies thinking that we are Turkish cause of how our lovely mom looks like  & greeting us with Eid with lots of  hugs & kisses! ..... my Grandma used to have the same awkward moment too. I miss the typical scene that I got used to see in Makkah of a Saudi gentleman with his sons offering pilgrims food to break their fasting & everyone of the boys would have a task. one would hold a tea pot, anoth

Things Egyptians And Indians Have in Common

Image
I wrote this upon the request of a dear friend of mine. I’ve been lucky enough to visit Hindustan or Al Hind as we call it in Arabic, back in January 2016. Here are some observations: We Both love life and like to party like crazy. We find excuses to dance and celebrate pretty much everything. I remember one of my Indian friends telling me about taking an Uber in Egypt once and there was a wedding procession on the road, the driver almost got out of the cab to join the dancers. Our family ties are so strong and mean the world to us. Our people are so sociable and nosey sometimes and we pay attention to what the people or society would say. We all care about what the aunties would say about us when it’s gossip time! Brothers take care of their sisters and consider it not just a responsibility but also an evidence of their masculinity and well upbringing. Chivalry and generosity to one's guests is not just a rare trait, It's the norm. We Love to brag a
