Rachel - Palestine's Angel
In the loving memory of Rachel Corrie, Palestine's Angel
11 years ago a beautiful person named Rachel was murdered while resisting tyranny & oppression .................
Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) from Olympia, Washington, was an American peace activist as well as a member of the pro-Palestinian group called International Solidarity Movement (ISM). She was crushed to death by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) armored bulldozer in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip under during the height of the second Palestinian intifada.
She had come to Gaza as part of her senior-year college assignment to connect her home town with Rafah in a sister cities project. While there she had engaged with other ISM activists in efforts to non-violently prevent the Israeli army's demolition of the homes of Palestinian people.
Less than two months after her arrival, on March 16, 2003, Corrie was killed after a three-hour confrontation between two bulldozers and eight ISM activists. Wearing a bright orange fluorescent jacket and, until shortly before her death, using a megaphone, she was killed while standing in the path of a bulldozer that she believed was about to demolish the house of local pharmacist Samir Nasralla's family whom she had befriended. She was run over twice by the bulldozer resulting in a fractured skull, shattered ribs and punctured lungs.

Only a couple of weeks later another international volunteer 24 year old American activist Brian Avery was shot by Israel Defense Forces on April 5, 2003. The shooting according to Human Rights Watch was "unprovoked and did not occur in the context of any apparent hostilities" caused Avery to suffer permanent disfigurement.
Only 6 days after Avery was shot in the face 21 year old British photography student Tom Hurndall was shot in the back of the head as he tried to rescue a terrified Palestinian child from a hail of Israeli bullets . On 11 April 2003, Tom Hurndall was shot in the head in the Gaza Strip by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sniper. Hurndall was left in a coma and died nine months later.
