Rachel: An American Conscience
Rachel Aliene Corrie (April 10, 1979 – March 16, 2003) from Olympia, Washington, was an American peace activist as well as a member of the pro-Palestinian group called International Solidarity Movement (ISM). She was crushed to death by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) armored bulldozer in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip under during the height of the second Palestinian intifada.

Only a couple of weeks later another international volunteer 24 year old American activist Brian Avery was shot by Israel Defense Forces on April 5, 2003. The shooting according to Human Rights Watch was "unprovoked and did not occur in the context of any apparent hostilities" caused Avery to suffer permanent disfigurement.
Only 6 days after Avery was shot in the face 21 year old British photography student Tom Hurndall was shot in the back of the head as he tried to rescue a terrified Palestinian child from a hail of Israeli bullets . On 11 April 2003, Tom Hurndall was shot in the head in the Gaza Strip by an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) sniper. Hurndall was left in a coma and died nine months later.
